Background:
This note provides an introduction to trade marks and designs, from a European perspective. It aims to explain the relevance of trade marks and designs to bioscience companies. It has been prepared by Morag Peberdy of Covington & Burling LLP, who is a member of the BIA’s Intellectual Property Advisory Committee.
Further guidance on trade marks can be found at http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/tm.htm, and more information about designs is found at http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/design.htm. It is recommended that professional advice from a trade mark agent or intellectual property lawyer be sought before applying for trade mark or design right protection, or if a dispute arises in relation to trade marks or designs.
